Selbie from United Kingdom stayed for 1 night(-s)

Positive aspects:
A wonderful experience from the moment we arrived;our first visit to Poland and our first hotel. We were en route to eastern Poland as guests at the wedding of former Polish employees in Scotland. I chose the Grand Hotel from the internet, being attracted to its historic past and its sympathtic approach to the provision of facilities for todays traveller whilst retaining the grandeur of yester-year. We arrived by rented car and eventually found the hotel to be met by the most helpful Hall porter who immediately solved our parking problems and ensured our efficient transfer to our rooms; all staff were professionals. We had a wonderful introduction to Poland.
Negative aspects:
The restaurant menu was appealing ; we should eat there that night but when we went for dinner at 8 pm the restaurant was empty ;beautifully presented tables but no diners and no atmosphere. We dined out. Breakfast was magnificent,a superb and imaginative selection with attentive and welcoming service

Positive aspects:
A wonderful old hotel in a nice part of the old town, convenient to all sights and restaurants. Very attentive staff, nicely appointed rooms, and pleasant bar. Breakfast was simple but good. Overall, a pleasant experience.
Negative aspects:
Staff was young and eager. English is well-understood, but occasionally requires a bit of additional explanation. Two unusual aspects of this trip: since the Pope was in town at the same time, all public facilities in Poland had prohibited alcohol for the duration of the Papal visit: no wine, no beer. Period. Had we been aware of Polish policy, it may have caused us to adjust the trip. Unlikely that the Pontiff will routinely visit Krakow! The only other disappointment was that we had purchased stamps at the desk for our postcards and asked the staff to frank and mail them. They agreed; it took several months for the postcards to reach home. Not sure if this was due to oversight, lack of clarity regarding surface vs. air mail, or my neglect to offer compensation (e.g. gratuity). I believe it was just an oversight. A precaution: if your room overlooks the street and the windows are open, be sensitive to loud evening revellers after the pubs close.
