The beginnings of the Pollera Hotel go back in time to 1834, when Kasper Poller founded the hotel and restaurant. The owner and creator as well as the inheritors cared for the hotel’s image so much, that it used to be one of the most charming and reputable hotels in Krakow. The hotel had ups and downs in its history. During the Second World War it was taken over by the Germans and after the city of Krakow gained its independence the hotel was turned into headquarters of the Red Army. In 1950 the building was nationalized and it fell into ruin. It was not until 1990 that the hotel has been returned into the hands of the rightful owners. It underwent a general renovation to become one of the most charming hotels in Krakow once more.
The hotel had its big time during the art nouveau period. That period had a great impact on the today’s looks of the hotel. The stained glass windows designed by Stanislaw Wyspianski in the corridors and all the souvenirs gathered in the reception lobby come from that period. In fact all the interiors are filled with art nouveau style adjusted to the modern standards.
It is worth mentioning that Pollera Hotel has been a choice of many prominent people in the Polish history, e.g. Helena Modrzejewska (a famous Polish actress from the turn of the twentieth century), Henryk Sienkiewicz (Polish writer, the Nobel Prize winner), Andrzej Seweryn (famous Polish actor) or Natalia Kukulska (popular pop artist).
Rooms
There are single, double and triple rooms waiting for the guests in the Pollera Hotel. All the rooms are equipped with fast Internet connection, sat-TV, radio and telephone.
All the rooms were designed in such a way, so that both tourists and business guest were satisfied. Namely, the guests can choose whether they want to stay in a room with a working desk or with a table. The other choice the guests in Pollera can make is whether they prefer a bathroom with a shower cabin or with a bathtub. In my opinion the rooms in Pollera hotel deserve more than two stars that the hotel is given. Especially the décor of the rooms in art nouveau style are praiseworthy.
For the more demanding clients there are two suites waiting in the Pollera Hotel. Both of them consist of a corridor, a living-room, a bedroom and a bathroom equipped with a shower cabin and a bathtub. The art nouveau interiors have been mixed with conquests of science to make the guest’s stay really comfortable.
Restaurant
Between 7am and 11:30 pm you can enjoy the meals from the Polish and international cuisine in the “U Pollera” hotel restaurant. There are three restaurant rooms at the guests’ disposal. The largest one is an exceptional place in art nouveau style that has witnessed great balls organized by Wanda Pollera at the beginning of the 20th century. This restaurant room still remains one of the most stylish and elegant in Krakow.
The “U Pollera” restaurant organizes banquettes, wedding parties and any kind of events. For the hotel’s guests, there is a possibility of ordering the meals straight to the rooms.
As far as the menu is concerned the restaurant offers the selected meals from the Polish and international cuisine. Some of the meals are a pride of the restaurant’s chef. I have to say, that I have no other choice but to agree with his recommendations. The pork shank Bavarian way or an onion soup in bread are excellent appetizers. Then comes the main course. I would recommend the pork loin baked with plums or a duck in apples. The burning “Pollera” pancakes are a specialty of the restaurant as far as desserts are concerned.
The prices in “U Pollera” restaurant are really reasonable and the kind you would expect in a regular restaurant in Krakow or even lower. For example the above mentioned dinner: the onion soup (6 PLN), pork loin baked with plums (22 PLN), the “Pollera” pancake (5 PLN) would cost 32 PLN, which is less than 8 EURO. To make the meal complete you can have a beer (7PLN), a glass of wine (4-6PLN), a glass of vodka (about 6PLN), non-alcoholic drink or a glass of fruit juice.
Anyway, if you stay at the Pollera Hotel, it is not worth wandering around to look for a place to eat. The hotel’s restaurant is an excellent choice. Elegant and stylish, it still remains quite inexpensive.
Conference rooms
“Pollera” Hotel is rather not a place for big conferences and events organizers. There is not enough space prepared for that king of things. However, the business guests willing to organize small business meetings for up to 12 participants will surely be satisfied. There is one conference room, stylishly designed and furnished. It is equipped with an OHP, portable screen, flip-chart and window shades. There is a fast Internet connection in the conference room as well. The direct neighborhood of the parlor next to the reception lobby makes it possible to organize coffee breaks in a really convenient way.
Additional Services
There is a fast Internet connection available in the rooms and in the conference room for the guests of the Pollera Hotel.
If you come to Krakow by car, there is a parking zone situated in the hotel’s courtyard.
Attraction Nearby
One might say that the location of the hotel itself is a great tourist attraction. The hotel is situated in the Old Town. All the historical buildings, museums, Jagiellonian Univeristy, Wawel Castle with the Wawel Dragon belching fire, Old Jewish District – Kazimierz, Marian Church, a great number of historical churches etc.; they are all within a walking distance.
The night-life lovers will not be disappointed either. The great number of pubs, clubs of various kinds, restaurants open till late in the evening (especially in the summer) should satisfy anyone willing to have fun during their stay in Krakow. If you are lucky enough you will also have an opportunity of participating in one of many cultural (and other) events and festivals that are organized in Krakow quite often.
